It is a privilege to serve as the Interim Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston. Our department has a long-standing tradition of excellence in education, research, and innovation, and I am deeply committed to upholding and advancing this legacy during our transitional period.
Our faculty, staff, and students are the driving force behind our department’s success, leading groundbreaking research and delivering an education thatprepares our students to excel in a rapidly changing technological landscape. Whether through pioneering research in areas such as renewable energy and healthcare or through strong collaborations with industry leaders, our department continues to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.

Yan Yao is the deputy lead of the soft matter scientific thrust and the principal investigator for UH’s portion of the Energy Storage Research Alliance.

Lihong Zhao, Assistant Professor
|
Zhao earned his doctorate in materials science from University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign in 2020. For the past year, he has been a Research Assistant Professor at UH.

Faheem Ershad, Assistant Professor
|
Ershad earned his doctorate in biomedical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. His research projects specialize in the development of wearable/implantable bioelectronics for physiological sensing and treatment, focusing on cardiac/neural health, tissue engineering, and machine learning.

Padmavati Viswanath, Instructional Assistant Professor
|
Viswanath brings over 11 years of experience as a lecturer to our faculty. Viswanath comes to UH from the University of Newcastle in Australia, where she served as a Lecturer. She has secured research grants from both academic and industry sources, supervised PhD students, and published widely in international journals and conferences.

Ajit Bopardikar, Senior Lecturer
|
Bopardikar earned his doctorate in imaging science from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2000. He has over a decade of experience working in multimedia analysis, biomedical signal analysis, and computational bioinformatics. He has also earned 6 U.S. patents.

Wei-Chuan Shih is reporting in Nature Communications Medicine, a new method to detect cancer with a simple blood test. With a 98.7 % accuracy rate this new test has the potential to detect cancer in the earliest stages.
|

Bhavin R. Sheth is redesigning sleep studies reducing the number of leads to 2. which has the potential of allowing for high quality sleep analysis outside clinical settings.

|
Jiming Bao is introducing new thermal imaging and infrared thermography techniques. These techniques, which measure temperature distributions without direct contact, are gaining traction across various fields.
