Letter from the Chair

Salutations from Houston!

Please join me in congratulating Professor Ji Chen on becoming our newest IEEE Fellow, Professor Zhu Han on becoming our first ACM Fellow, and Professor Harish Krishnamurthi on becoming our newest NSF CAREER Awardee. The past year has been impactful, as our research expenditures exceeded $10M, our citations approached 25,000, enrollments continued to grow across all three of our campuses (Houston main campus, Katy campus, and Dalian (China) campus), and we graduated 24 Ph.D. students, 180 M.S. students, and 121 B.S. students. The job market has been kind to our students, and we are delighted with their success.

Our faculty continued to excel in research and teaching innovation across the board in diverse areas including advanced battery technology, brain-machine interfaces, subsea robotics, AI systems for biomedicine, implanted device engineering, and cancer detection, to name a few.

I hope that you enjoy reading through this sampling of our recent research, and if any of these projects spark interest, do not hesitate to reach out to me about collaborative opportunities. Let us continue working towards creating a better, more dynamic future!

UH ECE Professor Ji Chen Earns IEEE Fellow Distinction

Ji Chen has been honored by being elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, one of the highest honors of distinction provided by the organization.

Zhu Han was recently named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for his contributions focused on the distributed and autonomous management for large-scale communication networks.

UH ECE Professor to Use NSF CAREER Award to Build More Robust Electrical Systems

Harish Krishnamoorthy has won the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award for his work with power systems and converters. The funded project aims to build more reliable electrical systems and grow the talent pipeline for power electronics.

$3M Grant To Develop Artificial Intelligence System To Diagnose Lupus Nephritis

Hien Van Nguyen will use a $3 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to bring AI into the diagnostic picture.

$1.7 Million Grant Award To Further Drone Swarm Research

Aaron Becker will use a $1.7 million grant to refine the algorithms to devise coordinated control of drone swarms.

Portable EEG Headset For Stroke Rehab Featured In Sensors Journal

Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal reports in the Sensors journal, a new low cost, portable brain-computer interface that connects the brain of stroke patients to powered exoskeletons for rehabilitation purposes.
